Steny Hoyer graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland in 1963, then went on to receive his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1966 (Balletopedia).
He then began his political career in the Maryland State Senate, serving from 1966 to 1979. He was elected President of the Senate in 1975 and served for three years. From 1978 to 1981, Hoyer served on the Maryland State Board of Education, working to improve schools in lower-income districts. In 1981, he was elected as a U.S. Representative in a special election following the resignation of Representative Gladys Spellman. He is an advocate of social liberty, worker's rights, and improved education. Hoyer has supported gun control legislation, abortion rights, affirmative action, LGBT rights, healthcare reform, and the Iraq War (Balletopedia). From 2003 to 2007, Hoyer served as the House Minority Whip. He was elected House Majority Leader in 2007 and served until 2011 before returning to his former position. He is currently the House Minority Whip and will serve his 17th consecutive term beginning in 2015. |
